Jet Ski

History Of The Jet Ski

Did you know that jet ski is actually a brand name of what is generically referred to as a "Personal Watercraft" (PWC). The jet ski was developed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in 1973. The Waverunner is essentially the same thing as a jet ski but the former was developed by Yamaha and is the trademark of their version of the personal watercraft. In 1986, Kawasaki created the first two person watercraft and in 1989 developed the two passenger "sit down" model.

The jet ski became popular and created some new water sport competitions for the watercrafts. The Freestyle, Freeride, and Closed Course Racing became popular sports of the jet ski fans. The Freestyle competition started in the late 1970's with a variety of tricks including air tricks, hood tricks and technical tricks. The tricks resembled some seen in BMX racing and Motocross.  The Freeride competition resembled the sport of surfing more than any other. The Jet Skier would ride the wave using it as a ramp to launch the rider airborne for fancy manoeuvres. The Closed Course Racing includes up to twenty riders vying to be the fastest skier on the course. The course consists of red buoys for left turns, yellow buoys for right turns, a starting line and a finish line. This racing competition on Jet Skis became popular in the mid 1970s with the USJSBA later called the IJSBA. The sport included different classes of expertise, such as the beginner, the novice, expert and pro. The competitions started on Memorial Day Weekend and continued through Labor Day. The final competition is the IJSBA World Finals held in Havasu, AZ.

Today jet skiing is a popular water sport enjoyed by men, women and children. The jet ski models are made in many different models to accommodate stand up, sit down, single person or tandem "sit down" models. The portability of the jet ski allows the sport to be enjoyed in all different types of venues, oceans or lakes. If you don't own one there are many facilities that rent them out for the public either by the day or by the hour. If you haven't tried running the waves on a Jet Ski then you don't know the fun you're missing.
