Jet Ski Engine

Changes To The Jet Ski Engine To Make It More Environmentally Friendly

When jet skis and other personal water craft first came out, they were manufactured with two-stroke engines. These jet ski engines are light and small, so it made sense to use them with these smaller water craft. However, this type of engine causes a lot of pollution because the oil that is used to lubricate the engine is mixed with the fuel, and as much as 25 percent of this mixture ends up getting released with the exhaust of the jet ski. This is a lot of pollution.

These days the Clean Air Act of amendments that were made in 1990 have led to many personal water craft using jet ski engines that are much less polluting. Some of the options include four-stroke engines, engines using catalytic converters, and two-stroke engines that use direct injection instead of the total loss method of the past. Manufacturers have also started using other pollution control methods on the jet skis to make them able to meet the new requirements.

Many bodies of water now only permit the use of personal water craft that use jet ski engines that meet or exceed those implemented in 1996. This means that if you are purchasing a used jet ski you will want to make sure that it has the right sort of engine. Those made before 1988 are particularly bad when it comes to pollution, and even some of the newer models still use jet ski engines that cause a lot of pollution because manufacturers are allowed to continue producing them as long as other models exceed the current standards and things even out.

Some states have even stricter regulations than the national ones, so if you live in New York or California you need to be especially careful which type of jet ski you purchase. You don't want to buy a personal water craft and then not be able to use it because it is too polluting to be allowed in the water near where you live. It is probably best to find the craft with the jet ski engine that puts out the least pollution anyways. Why would you want to cause any more pollution than necessary?
